Last week we took a trip to Pittsburgh and New York, to visit family and friends, and to watch Sean graduate from Columbia. It was a great trip. The most exciting part was seeing Sean graduate, or rather, seeing him in his cap and gown. (Columbia is so big that you don't get to see anyone really graduate.) Flying first-class with dad's frequent flyer miles was also pretty cool.
Sitting in the ceremony and listening to the droning on of various faculty members, I realized that Sean has an MFA in writing and directing films from one of the top universities in the world, and he is wasting his time making coffee. The thing is, we need the money, so he is willing and happy to sling coffee for a living. But what he's giving up is worth so much more. He has the talent and ability to create something really beautiful and, let's face it, make a lot more money than he would if he stayed in coffee world forever. So I realized we have to make his creative pursuits, i.e. writing scripts and making films, a priority. We're trying to figure out how to do that now. I can't think of anything more important.
People keep asking us how Maple did on the trip. She was a great traveler, only having one small freakout when we had to sit on the runway in Philly for an hour. She is crawling around like crazy, and she is learning new vocabulary words from her parents and grandparents. Her latest word is "shit." And she looks so cute when she says it.
